When starting a project you always want to have a plan. Whether that's a professional drawing or just an idea, knowing what you want for your space is a must. Having a general idea of how you want your room to feel (warm or cold) will help you start building in the right direction. For those of you who do not have a single clue what tones your space should have, don't worry, I'm here to help! If you can imagine your space, try and see the following; -Do you want your space to feel warm and cozy or would you prefer a colder feel? -Do you want wood finishes or concrete finishes? -What color do you see your space having? Now that you have answered this you should have a better idea of where to go with your design. The ones of you choose warm and cozy wood tones, you will be looking for materials that are pulling red, orange, yellow and beige undertones. These colors will help bring warmth to your space in seconds. Do you prefer a cooler feel? You will be looking for materials that pull green, blue and purple undertones. Choosing materials that have these colors in them will help you create a space that feels colder. Now if you are still following what I am saying, we're on the right track. If you are still lost, you can always seek help from a designer. The designer will help you understand what I am saying above but in person and really show you the different options. This will not only help you learn but it will also help you feel more at ease with the materials being chosen. Let's keep going! The feel of your space has been chosen, now it is time to select the materials. Depending on the space you are doing, the materials you will need will vary. Most of the time for a complete room change you will start from the floors up. If you are only changing a couple things in your space then choosing a starting point, like furniture, paint, decor etc will help you to create a starting point. Since I mentioned there would be some tips and tricks I think here would be a great place to share a couple with you. Mixing different textures is a good idea. Scale and size. It matters. Having the right size for materials is something to keep an eye out for. Find the perfect balance between the color tones, textures, and scale. The goal is to create something beautiful that will catch the attention when walking into the room without overwhelming your eyes. Do start with the biggest items first, then add the smallest ones around. Overlapping your materials will help you understand the flow and notice if the materials are a fit, or if they need to be changed. Do not keep everything you started with. Once you find the perfect selection you will know it. If you are not getting a wow effect from your selection, keep looking until you do. Once you have chosen all your materials, placed them together and you are happy with your selections your sample board is done! Decluttering seems obvious to most, but somehow still gets forgotten very often. Having a clean, decluttered space helps you go through what you still need and what you don't use anymore. This will now make your new space look less cluttered and you will officially start fresh once your project is completed.
